Lyra was born in northern Greece on a small farm belonging to an elderly Shepherd. All her life, she had protected and herded small flocks of sheep. For winter months, the Shepherd and his flock would move to warmer pastures, with Lyra always close keeping the sheep in line. One snowy night, the Shepherd overexerted himself and fell ill. They had almost reached a village along the way, but it was much too far for the Shepherd to keep going. Seeing distant lights, Lyra kept her composure and made a decision— she was going to run as fast as possible to find help. She set off, pushing herself as hard as she could, her energy seemingly never-ending. When she reached the village, she went around, barking and scratching at doors, trying to get someone's attention.
Most of the villagers ignored her, angry at being woken up by what seemed to be a stray dog in the middle of the night. But her cries caught the ear of someone willing to listen: the Ilion Musher! They were staying at a small inn, visiting the Greek countryside and making use of the open fields for some sledding. They stepped out to see what was causing the dog so much distress. Once Lyra saw them, she hurriedly explained the situation to them. With no time to waste, the Musher grabbed their sled— Lyra was more than willing to let them put on a harness onto her. Sprinting back to the Shepherd, the two of them were able to help bring him and the flock to the village for help. The Musher was surprised at her ability to keep her head clear, and how quickly she was able to pull the added extra weight.
Once they arrived, the village doctor tended to the Shepherd. Immediately after everything had calmed down, Lyra broke down from her anxiety and exhaustion. She had pushed away her feelings this entire time. The Musher felt moved by her determination, tending to her, calming her, and giving her a good meal, all the while making sure she was able to rest comfortably for the rest of the night. The next morning, they went to check on how the Shepherd was doing. He was so thankful to the Musher for saving his life, and was proud of Lyra's hard work. However, he knew after the night prior that he was far too frail now to keep up his work. He had already been debating selling off his flock and retiring. He was worried about what to do with Lyra, and heard the Musher speak of the Ilion Sanctuary. She was still young, and needed care he could no longer provide. The Shepherd had asked the Musher if they could take her, and give her a life where she would be happy, well taken care of, and where her talents could shine. The Musher was torn, but agreed. As much as it hurt, Lyra also agreed. She only wanted the best for her owner, and felt too that it was finally time for him to rest from his years of hard work.
Now under the care of the Musher, she continues on her farm’s memory by diligently racing with her new "flock". Lyra is glad to still have purpose, and thankful that her and her owner have new lives they can live happily.
